The 5th L & The Violence Prevention Program is inviting any of you with youth groups of any kind to take part of our P.H.A.T Program which takes place at the University Of Maryland Hospital

The purpose of the PHAT tours is to:

• Encourage the youth to think about their futures
• Identify healthy outlets for managing their feelings
• Practice adaptive coping techniques
• Recognize their strengths
• Feel encouraged about making positive changes

The PHAT program works exclusively with The 5th L – creative poets performing spoken word theatre, creative poetry and role playing activities to stimulate the youths awareness of risk-taking behavior associated with violence. The 5th L has a passion for artistic expression and with their words they inspire in a positive way. Their motto, ‘never plead the 5th, but always speak the truth’ is evident in their writings and performances.

Femi Lawal AKA The Dri Fish of the 5th L is a resident of Baltimore City but was born in London, England and raised partially in Nigeria. The Dri Fish has been performing spoken word since 1995, at the same time altering the destructive thinking and decision making patterns of people with his candid social critique offered by his lyricism. Femi will provide leadership for the poetry workshops as well as coordinate any performance. He is actively involved in community, youth and parenting issues and performs throughout the country.

David Ross AKA Native Son of the 5th L is a resident of Baltimore City and a poet. David has been humbly inspiring audiences through exquisite lyrics since 1997. This award-winning artist delivers a captivating performance – enlightening listeners on cultural, educational, family, political, self love, social, and spiritual issues. David will also provide leadership for the poetry workshops as well as coordinate spoken word performances. He is a Coppin State graduate with a Bachelors degree in English. He performs weekly at different venues speaking out on issues relating to violence, education, and children and youth.

WAGTi Radio (WeAreGreaterThani), formerly known as April Sims A & E Radio (Arts & Entertainment Radio) was created to provide independent artists and entrepreneurs with a platform to showcase their talent. WAGTi Radio will be dedicated to promoting, educating, motivating and inspiring independent artists and entrepreneurs.

“This is an idea of mine that’s been a long time coming,” says April. “Independent artists from all the arts have never had one place to showcase their art, whether it’s music or poetry, and I intend to give them that. Everyone’s talking about how the Internet is changing the music industry by empowering artists with all the tools they need promote themselves. While this is true, going from playing house parties to becoming a full time musician isn’t going to happen with a MySpace page and few live videos. It’s going to take time, hard work, enthusiastic fans willing to help you out, and a ton of different tools and services in order for you to take things to the next level.

This includes building and branding your own website and using it as a homebase. This has never been easier and the tools I am going to share make it fun and effortless. This includes building a strong mailing list, one that gives you results, analytics and split tests your messages. This includes PAYING for advertising, and knowing when and where to do that. This includes listening to the people that have the best and most applicable things to say about the music industry and frankly there are very few from the last time I wrote this that will still make the list.

This includes multimedia sites. Having music is no longer enough. You need to put a focus on creating content with multimedia from videos to pictures to presentations to article writing and podcasts.

There is hope for the music industry. There is a great chance that you can make a living with your music. The tools are here. How you use them will either help you succeed or have you in the same place a year from now as you are today.

The ability to improvise a skilled performance while speaking scripted and memorized lines is of paramount importance to actors working in today’s film and television productions, which often allow very little if any rehearsal time. Through his innovative Improvisation Technique, Stephen Book shows the actor how to create a spontaneous performance by applying improvisation to traditional script-acting for film, theater, and television. The seminar will also include a presentation on the pros and cons of traditional acting classes.

The seminar length is about one and a half hours.

There comes a time in everyone’s life when they come across a person or an artist that touches their heart.  This is true when it comes to Tshombe the Poet.  He is both a person and an artist that has touched the lives of many.  He is the brain child behind Freedom Verse Cafe, the creator of The Mixed Tape Edition of Freedom Verse Cafe, writer, poet, spoken word artist, friend, husband, son and so much more.   His words, through his poetry and spoken word, have also enriched and educated the lives of others.  His vivid poetry, brought to life with his spoken word and his carefully selected music choices, takes you on a journey throughout time and the universe.



Tshombe also reviews spoken word cds and blogs on behalf of Freedom Verse Cafe.  Freedom Verse Cafe is the brain child of Tshombe, which has positively touched and enriched the thousands of visitors over the years with its fusion of jazz, blues, funk and spoken words.  Freedom Verse Cafe the website spun off Freedom Verse Cafe the radio show, which can be heard every Saturday on Blog Talk Radio, and created The Mixtape Edition of Freedom Verse Cafe.

Tshombe was once asked what spoken word meant to him and he replied “Spoken Word poetry is a very newly revived form of poetry that has been around since the 90’s. Spoken word is a transformation from an art that began deep in the heart of what was known as the beat poet era of the ‘40s and ‘60s. These were poets who challenged mainstream politics and culture to incite mental revolutions against what I would dub as “idle conformity or assimilation” by government rule; speaking out against oppression, racism, and war. In most cases this was the only form of thought expression albeit a dangerous one regardless of the first amendment that is designed to protect all of our citizens. Spoken word as a genre has always been seen as non-musical selections like famous speeches and orations, but never as a poetic art deserving of it’s on section. Even today this still is the case when you walk into a record shop or shop on iTunes you won’t find a legitimate genre for this beautiful and ageless art form.
